It appears in the center’s spring 2009 quarterly “Intelligence Report,” which is titled “The Year in Hate.” For the first time, the national list identifies more than 900 groups, up from 888 in 2007 and 602 in 2000.
The national immigration debate, the worsening recession and the election of Barack Obama, the nation’s black president, are three forces driving the increase in hate groups, according to the report. “But we do believe there is a real phenomenon out there pushing this.” The list is divided into eight categories with the number of groups in parentheses: Ku Klux Klan (186), Neo-Nazi (196), White Nationalist (111), Racist Skinhead (98), Christian Identity (39), Neo-Confederate (93), Black Separatist (113) and General Hate (90).
Pacifica Forum’s founder, retired UO professor Orval Etter, now living in an assisted living facility in south Eugene, said Thursday that the list is “a lot of rubbish.” The annual list is based on information gathered for the law center’s Intelligence Project from hate group publications, citizen reports, law enforcement agencies, field sources and news reports.
